Gina Neff writes a letter in the Times in response to William Hague.

Earlier this week, William Hague wrote a letter in the Times about the potential of AI to foster extremism.

In response, Prof Gina Neff, Executive Director of the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy has written in the Times about the pressing need for secure and safe AI systems.

Prof Neff highlighted the need a system-wide approach to build an AI ecosystem that is responsible, is safe and works for all.

For example, Gina writes that wiping personal data is not enough to keep people safe online: ‘we also need to ensure data access to platforms for independent, verified researchers. Without such access, regulators are asking platform companies to “mark their own homework”’, she wrote.
